Middlesbrough 10k Training 2022
2022 saw us partnering again with The Jane Tomlinson RunForAll Charity, Middlesbrough Borough Council and Everyone Active to provide some free training sessions in the run up to the Middlesbrough 10k. Everyone Active provided the cycle track which was lovely to have our own space to work.
We held 8 free, fun training sessions to invite the participants to meet each other before the event. Our aim was for everyone to enjoy themselves and more importantly enjoy their 10k run on the day. Our sessions were designed so people could have conversations alongside training and as a result some great new friendships were made.
Just in case you missed them here is a quick rundown of what we go up to.
• Week 1 - Introductions and discussions around what is expected to train for the 10k. We were aiming for these sessions to be the dedicated training session with homework to be a nice easy run to push the distance and weekly Strength and Conditioning exercises encouraged. We had a nice steady run focussing on posture.
• Week 2 - Pyramid session with 100 - 400m repeats. Got to meet a couple of the pacers Lisa and Jason Devison. Thank you guys for popping in. We were also joined by the lovely Aimee from AMALAwellness C.I.C. who talked us through a nice relaxing breathing routine at the end. Bliss!
• Week 3 - We did intervals using 4 cones. Start at the first cone, steady run to the second, fast run to the third and sprint to the fourth. Walk back to recover and hit it again! Everyone worked at their own pace.
• Week 4 - Lovely run out to Stewart Park for a hill repeat session. Gentle run back to cool down followed by another breathing session with Aimee.
• Week 5 - This week saw beautiful sunshine and record temperatures, but we kept the session open for those that wanted to come along and we headed out for a nice gentle run/walk in the shade. Lovely route through Stewart Park to Grange Farm at Ormesby Hall, through the grounds and back to MSV.
• Week 6 - Saw us focussing on posture and pace by pairing up for meet and greets around the 1k track.
• Week 7 - was our trial run out to cover distance. Big shout out to Alec who recced a run during the week which covered 5k by the time the runners were back at Stewart Park. I checked them all in and they continued for 1 or 2 laps of the park depending on how they felt. Absolutely fantastic efforts! Well done!
• Week 8 - as this was our final session with the 10k only 4 days away it was designed to be very gentle and social with meet and greets, Indian File etc. However, after promising not to run too fast I got the relay batons out for the 2 teams to run opposite directions around a 250m circuit. Wow! The competition was on. As runners were running opposite directions it was difficult to gauge until handover, but the finish could not have been closer (although Pauline was spotted moving the finish cones ha ha!)
We also had pacer 1:05 at our sessions and got to meet pacer 1:20 at the end which was really nice.
All sessions starting with a warm-up and finishing with cool-down stretches. Great feedback received...look forward to seeing you all next year
